CLIMATE CHANGE

Marrakech climate talks: giving the fossil fuel lobby a seat at
the table. Is it a conflict of interest to have representatives
of coal and oil companies at the climate change discussions? As
the world gathers in Morocco for the historic first meeting under
the Paris agreement – called “COP22” but now also “CMA1” – it
does so with the unprecedented involvement of corporate interests
who have fought climate action around the world, funded climate

China Announces Plan to Curb Carbon Emissions. China has
announced a plan to curb greenhouse gas emissions over the next
several years, while capping coal consumption and increasing the

FUELS

Carbon-capture project's startup date delayed again. Southern Co.
again has pushed back the startup date for its next-generation
coal plant in Mississippi, driving the 582-megawatt power plant's
costs toward $7 billion. If the company does not meet the Dec. 31
deadline, it will have to give up $250 million in federal tax
benefits that would ease the cost burden for the Kemper County
energy facility.

For Renewable Energy, Brexit Spurs Mixed Prospects. When Mark
Meyrick sat down with a developer to review plans for two solar
farms the company he works for is building in Wales and
southwestern England, one number jumped out at him. With the
value of the pound sliding since Britons voted to leave the
European Union, the cost of the imported solar panels Good Energy
must buy has risen.

Getting to Green. Denmark has long been committed to stem climate
change. That, perhaps, is not surprising, being a small, coastal,
low-lying country vulnerable to rising sea levels, and
enthusiastically engaged in international affairs. But no single
nation - not even the United States of America - can stop climate
change single-handedly.
