Canada set to agree carbon price, marking climate split with
Trump. Canada's government and 10 provinces are set to agree a
national carbon price on Friday, doubling down on a bid to cut
greenhouse gas emissions just weeks before avowed climate change
skeptic Donald Trump becomes U.S. President. Liberal Prime
Minister Justin Trudeau says the carbon price - the first of its
kind in Canada…

AIR POLLUTION

Paris curbs car use as air pollution chokes city. Air pollution
in Paris has hit dangerous levels prompting city officials to
curb car use and make public transport free of charge until
Friday. The city's Metro and bus services have been free since
Tuesday and set days of travel have been allocated for cars with
odd and even numbers, in an attempt bring down levels of PM10, a
fine particulate matter, in the air.

CLIMATE CHANGE

As Trump Knocks Obama on Climate, Firms Recommit to Carbon
Reduction. Cheaper natural gas and wind power are keeping
corporations on the lower-emissions path. Many big corporations
continue to support efforts to reduce carbon emissions, vowing to
stay the course despite the election of Donald Trump, who has
promised to dismantle the Obama administration’s climate agenda
and this week chose a global-warming skeptic to lead the U.S.
Environmental Protection Agency.

Trump names Scott Pruitt, Oklahoma attorney general suing EPA on
climate change, to head the EPA. President-elect Donald Trump on
Thursday nominated Scott Pruitt, the attorney general of the oil
and gas-intensive state of Oklahoma, to head the Environmental
Protection Agency, a move signaling an assault on President
Obama’s climate change and environmental legacy. Pruitt has spent
much of his energy as attorney general fighting the very agency
he is being nominated to lead.

How Trump Can Influence Climate Change. If the United States
continues to create greenhouse gases at the so-called business as
usual level, net emissions could reach 6.9 gigatons by 2025. But
the country is poised for big reductions. Last year, when 195
nations agreed to reduce emissions together, the United States
pledged to lower its share to 26 to 28 percent below 2005 levels
by 2025.

Amid fears of Trump cutback, NASA announces long-term climate
mission. Could this be push-back from an agency anticipating
cuts? Could the Trump administration dismantle GeoCARB? Soon,
NASA will be observing plants from a space-bound satellite. That
is, unless the Trump administration puts a stop to it.

Exxon, Chevron face Philippines climate change probe. Exxon
Mobil, Chevron and Conoco Phillips are among the top targets of
an inquiry by the Commission on Human Rights of the Philippines
into the links between fossil fuel production, climate change and
people losing homes and livelihoods to weird weather. Public
hearings will start in April 2017, Commissioner Roberto Cadiz
revealed in an English language press conference on Thursday.

Zero ice? 'If it happened in the past, it could happen again'.
Even though the ice sheet that covers Greenland has increased and
shrunk in response to climate change for millions of years, the
rapid melting now occurring may have no known precedent.
The melting of the Greenland ice sheet, four times bigger than
California, is a major contributor to global sea-level rise and
potentially has catastrophic consequences for the planet.

Electric aircraft maps sea ice to protect polar bears. A group of
scientists recently flew up to the Arctic to test a new
technology that they think might make measuring the ice pack —
and tracking the polar bears that occupy it — easier and faster.
The researchers were experimenting with a new kind of autonomous
flight technology, which they hoped would give them more
localized and immediate information about the region.

What does Scott Pruitt believe about climate science?
Environmental groups yesterday sounded off against Oklahoma
Attorney General Scott Pruitt (R) leading U.S. EPA, calling him a
climate denier with deep fossil fuel ties who has relentlessly
aimed to thwart greenhouse gas standards. Pruitt is among the
chief attorneys general leading a 28-state fight against the
agency's carbon regulations for power plants…

DROUGHT

Drought persisting across Maryland despite recent rain. A burst
of wet weather to end November did not ease a drought that
continues to develop across Maryland. About 42 percent of the
state is in a moderate drought, according to an update posted
Thursday by the U.S. Drought Monitor. The drought stretches from
Prince George's County to the south, Washington County to the
west and Cecil County to the east.

FUELS

Science binds Orange County family's experience. There’s some
pretty impressive brain power being flexed in the Fountain Valley
home of Nicola and Chad Weiss. It’s a good bet theirs is the only
home on the block with a backyard shed converted into a science
lab. True, it may have started as a cool place from which to
launch dry ice bombs and a space where the family didn’t have to
share the pungent side effects of some of 15-year-old Sean Weiss’
experiments with methane extraction from feces.

GREEN ENERGY

5 Major Businesses Powered By Renewable Energy. Major businesses
are embracing renewable energy in a big way – and discovering
there’s an awful lot of green to be made in a clean
energy-powered economy. More and more businesses in the US and
abroad are embracing sustainable practices as they begin to feel
the impacts of the climate crisis where it matters most: their
bottom lines.

Supercapacitor energy density could soar using contact-lens
polymer. Engineers are nothing if not creative. Significant
research is going into improved ways of storing electricity,
including alternatives to the currently dominant lithium-ion
battery-cell chemistry in electric cars. That includes using
supercapacitors to substitute for storage batteries in some
circumstances.

Cuomo announces funding for low-income solar. New York Gov.
Andrew Cuomo (D) announced $3.6 million to spur the development
of solar in low-income communities this week. The move is part of
a wider attempt by the Cuomo administration to overhaul the
Empire State's electric grid, and represents an attempt to solve
a conundrum that has long bedeviled greens: how to make
residential solar more accessible to low- and moderate-income
families.

OPINIONS

Earnest: 'Reality' could intrude on Trump's climate change views.
White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest suggested on Thursday
that President-elect Donald Trump — who has waffled on whether or
not he believes in the widely-accepted science of climate change
— might change his tune once he takes office. "The president has
himself observed that it’s one thing to make grand pronouncements
on the campaign trail but once you enter the oval office and
you’re responsible for managing the affairs…

Report helps scientists communicate how global warming is
worsening natural disasters. A new article helps scientists
communicate how humans are intensifying extreme weather clearly
and accurately. Climate scientists have done a great job winning
the scientific arguments about climate change. To be clear about
what I mean, we have done a very good job investigating whether
or not the Earth’s climate…

Hundreds of Methane Vents Discovered Off Coast of Pacific
Northwest. Deep beneath the ocean, off the coast of Washington,
Oregon, and northern California, scientists have discovered
roughly 500 bubbling vents spewing methane, a potent greenhouse
gas. Underwater methane vents were first discovered in the 1980s
and have since been identified all over the world.
