This landmark study, funded by the Air Resources Board and conducted by the University of Southern California, found that children who were exposed to higher levels of particulate matter, nitrogen dioxide, acid vapor and elemental carbon, had significantly lower lung function at age 18. Age 18 is significant in that the lungs are nearly mature and it is unlikely that these lung function deficits will be reversed. The greatest impacts may occur later in life and result in an increased risk of morbidity and mortality.
