The Staff Report and Technical Support Document titled “Review of the California Ambient Air Quality Standard for Nitrogen Dioxide,” contain findings from the review by staff of the ARB and the Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment (OEHHA) of the scientific literature on nitrogen dioxide and its human health effects, welfare effects, public exposure, and atmospheric chemistry. Based on the results of that review, ARB staff has submitted a recommendation to revise the nitrogen dioxide standard. The Staff Report provides a summary and overview of the ambient air quality standard review process, a summary of the Technical Support Document, staff findings, and staff recommendation for the standard. The Technical Support Document is a review and evaluation of the scientific literature on public exposure, atmospheric chemistry, health effects, and welfare effects of exposure to nitrogen dioxide. Our time for this effort is very short. The creation of a viable list of options to advance Green Chemistry must be submitted to Secretary Linda Adams by January 2008. From that list proposed recommendations for a final policy are due by July 1, 2008. We have a tremendous amount of work ahead and look forward to working with you on this effort. To facilitate the most creative and constructive public participation process, we have entitled the Conversation with California. The Conversation with California includes a wide array of opportunities for you to participate. I invite you to join the Conversation with California and contribute to developing a comprehensive chemical policy and long-term environmental protection for California. We hope you will join us at our first public stakeholder's meeting scheduled for Wednesday, June 27th 1:30 p.m. - 3:30 p.m., Sierra Hearing Room, Cal/EPA Building, 1001 I Street, Sacramento. If you cannot attend, you will be able to listen via web cast. A Website has been set up that allows an open and transparent exchange of ideas. We are A Journal/Blog space gives you the opportunity to share your thoughts and see what others think about the four main Green Chemistry topics areas: Cradle to Cradle: Through product design and industrial innovation, produce products that reduce the use of harmful chemicals, thus generating fewer emissions and less waste. How do you think California should move to a Cradle to Cradle framework? Green Chemistry: Consider public health and the environmental effects of chemicals during the process of designing products and processes. How do you think California should stimulate Green Chemistry? Toxics in Products by Design: Identify strategies to encourage manufacturers to take greater responsibility for the products they produce that contain toxic materials. How do you think California should address the issue of toxics in products by design? Toxics in Products by Accident: Develop information on approaches that encourage cleaner and less polluting industrial processes. SAVE THE DATE * SAVE THE DATE Air quality models simulate the physical and chemical mechanisms that transport and transform particulate matter in the atmosphere. These models are used to explore scientific hypotheses and help establish regulatory frameworks. Accurate models define air quality science which informs public policy debate on urban and regional smog formation, global climate change, stratospheric ozone depletion and the health effects of particulate matter inhalation. Currently there are no regularly scheduled meetings that address the techniques and algorithms used to model atmospheric aerosol dynamics. This conference is being held to meet this need. Researchers who are developing and refining aerosol modules for air quality models are invited to submit an abstract for an oral or poster presentation. Anyone with an interest in the subject is welcome to attend. Conference Sponsors California leads the way in establishing both sound science and public policy on air quality issues. The California Air Resources Board has been supporting new research and developing innovative regulatory policies for 40 years and maintains one of the most proactive and cutting-edge programs in the world. Formed in 2005, the Air Quality Research Center brings together one of the largest concentrations of air quality scientists in the United States and is at the forefront of expanding our understanding of critical environmental challenges facing our planet in the 21st century. Please see the Air Quality Research Center web page: http://airquality.ucdavis.edu/pages/news/iama.html for more details.
