From: smara@arb.ca.gov Dear Standards List Serve participant: The Air Resources Board (ARB) has released the Staff Report/ Initial Statement of Reasons for the proposed amendments to the ambient air quality standard for ozone. The Staff Report entitled "REVIEW OF THE AMBIENT AIR QUALITY STANDARD FOR OZONE," can be downloaded at the ARB website listed below. The Staff Report, prepared by the staff of the Air Resources Board and Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment, contains findings and recommendations for revising the California standard for ozone. This release begins the official 45 day public comment period prior to the proposed recommendations being considered by the ARB at a public hearing on April 28, 2005 in El Monte, CA. The proposed recommendations are the outcome of a multi-year effort by ARB and OEHHA staff that included a review of the scientific literature on public exposure, atmospheric chemistry, and health effects of exposure to ozone. This health-based standards evaluation was a requirement of The Children's Environmental Health Protection Act (Senate Bill 25, Escutia, 1999). In developing the Staff Report and recommendations, staff considered and responded to comments by the public and by an independent scientific peer review committee, the Air Quality Advisory Committee. All regulatory documents regarding the proposed recommendations to amend the ambient air quality standard for ozone can be accessed at the ARB website at: http://www.arb.ca.gov/regact/ozone05/ozone05.htm Details of the ozone standard review process, including findings, presentations, and transcripts of the January 2005 Air Quality Advisory Committee meeting, are available on the Ozone Standards review website at http://www.arb.ca.gov/research/aaqs/ozone-rs/ozone-rs.htm.
