Delfino, M.D., Ph.D. University of California, Irvine Thursday, April 17, 2014 1:30 pm, PDT (WEBCAST) Sierra Hearing Room, 2nd Floor, Cal/EPA Building 1001 I Street, Sacramento, California Cardiovascular disease outcomes have been associated with exposure to ambient particulate matter (PM) air pollution in many epidemiological studies. Experimental studies have revealed changes in the expression of key genes with exposure to air pollution from fossil fuel combustion. We hypothesized that blood cell gene expression levels along biological pathways relevant to cardiovascular outcomes would be associated with traffic-related air pollutant exposures in elderly subjects with coronary artery disease living in the Los Angeles Air basin. In the present study data were collected in a cohort panel study funded by National Institute of Health (NIH), National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS). Overall, the results obtained in this study support our hypothesis that traffic-related air pollutant exposures affect the expression of genes in pathways that are important to adverse cardiovascular outcomes. From: rding@arb.ca.gov We are pleased to announce the next Series topic: “Do Inhaled Ambient Particles Induce Oxidative Stress and Inflammation in the Brain?" . Michael T. Kleinman, Ph.D. Department of Medicine, University of California, Irvine Tuesday, July 15, 2014 1:30 pm, PDT (WEBCAST) Sierra Hearing Room, 2nd Floor, Cal/EPA Building 1001 I Street, Sacramento, California ABSTRACT: Numerous epidemiological and toxicological studies have demonstrated that exposure to ambient PM is associated with increased heart and lung disease and death; however, little is known about the effects of PM exposure on the central nervous system. This study took advantage of a multicity project sponsored by the Health Effects Institute to compare central nervous system impacts among sites with different source contributions to ambient PM. Brain tissue from transgenic mice exposed for 6 months to concentrated ambient fine particles (CAPs) in cities with very different pollutant source profiles was examined.
