Thursday, March 24, 2015 1:00 p.m., PDT (WEBCAST) Sierra Hearing Room, 2nd Floor, Cal/EPA Building 1001 I Street, Sacramento, California California's building code requires mechanical ventilation to manage indoor-generated pollutants in the state's airtight, energy efficient homes. Yet outdoor air also contains pollutants at levels that can be hazardous, including fine particulate matter (PM 2.5) and ozone. With the objective of informing new home designs and future versions of the building code, this study evaluated eight combinations of ventilation and air cleaning systems for pollutant removal and energy use. Thursday, May 24, 2016 1:30 p.m., PDT (WEBCAST) Sierra Hearing Room, 2nd Floor, Cal/EPA Building 1001 I Street, Sacramento, California With growing interests in travel demand management, smart growth, climate change mitigation, and transportation safety and equity, increasing number of communities have adopted policies to promote complete streets. Complete streets are structured to make streets accessible for all users - drivers, transit users, pedestrians, cyclists, seniors, children, and people with disabilities. They are designed to encourage travel behavior changes to promote health benefits. However, there is little evidence of whether or how these changes take place with complete street conversion. Suzanne Paulson, Ph.D., UC Los Angeles, Cort Anastasio, Ph.D., UC Davis, and Alam Hasson, Ph.D., California State University, Fresno Thursday, September 1, 2016 1:30 p.m., PDT (WEBCAST) Sierra Hearing Room, 2nd Floor, Cal/EPA Building 1001 I Street, Sacramento, California Oxidative stress mediated by reactive oxygen species (ROS) is a leading hypothesis for the mechanism by which particulate pollution contributes to a range of illnesses, including asthma and cardiovascular mortality. The goal of this study was to understand the components in particles responsible for ROS formation under physiological conditions. The investigators conducted a field campaigns in the South Coast Air Basin, aimed at capturing photochemical smog; and in Fresno, which has significant contributions from biomass burning. Samples were extracted in simulated lung fluid, and analyzed for their ability to generate ROS such as hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂) and hydroxyl radical (.OH) and to consume dithiothreitol (DTT) The contributions of transition metals and quinones to ROS formation was also investigated.
