Veerabhadran Ramanathan, Ph.D., and Lynn M. Russell, Ph.D. Scripps Institution of Oceanography, University of California, San Diego Tuesday, July 23, 2013 1:30 pm, PDT (WEBCAST) Sierra Hearing Room, 2nd Floor, Cal/EPA Building 1001 I Street, Sacramento, California “If California’s efforts in reducing black carbon can be replicated globally, we can slow down global warming in the coming decades by about 15 percent, in addition to protecting people’s lives,” says Dr. Ramanathan. A first-of-its kind study examining the impact of black carbon (BC) on California has made it clear the state’s efforts to reduce emissions from trucks and buses has also helped in the fight against climate change. Even while diesel fuel consumption rose by a factor of five over a 45-year period, black carbon levels decreased by about 90 percent over that same period, according to the study. Researchers found the state’s efforts to reduce diesel emissions have lessened the impact of global warming on California. The study’s results support a growing body of scientific evidence that suggests it is possible to immediately slow the pace of climate change by reducing emissions of short-lived climate pollutants, like black carbon.
