Thursday, September 1, 2016 1:30 p.m., PDT (WEBCAST) Sierra Hearing Room, 2nd Floor, Cal/EPA Building 1001 I Street, Sacramento, California Oxidative stress mediated by reactive oxygen species (ROS) is a leading hypothesis for the mechanism by which particulate pollution contributes to a range of illnesses, including asthma and cardiovascular mortality. The goal of this study was to understand the components in particles responsible for ROS formation under physiological conditions. The investigators conducted a field campaigns in the South Coast Air Basin, aimed at capturing photochemical smog; and in Fresno, which has significant contributions from biomass burning. Samples were extracted in simulated lung fluid, and analyzed for their ability to generate ROS such as hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂) and hydroxyl radical (.OH) and to consume dithiothreitol (DTT) The contributions of transition metals and quinones to ROS formation was also investigated.
