Can you drive a Class 8 vehicle?  Do you want to be part of the solution to air pollution and climate change? Do you like working in a shop environment with state of the art technology on a team of highly skilled engineers and technicians?  California Air Resources Board’s (CARB) heavy-duty emissions testing facility is looking to hire two commercial Class 8 drivers to join their team. Incumbents must be safety conscious, detail oriented, and responsible.  Only professional drivers that are proficient and have experience with air brakes, manual transmissions, and experience with safety requirements related to Class 8 vehicle operation should apply. Candidates are required to have a California commercial vehicle license (Class A), participate in the DMV pull notice program, and participate in random drug testing.  Typical duties will include completing inspection sheet once the vehicle arrives at the lab, installing vehicles on the HD chassis dynamometer, operating vehicles on the HD chassis dynamometer, and tracking and scheduling vehicles for safety and maintenance inspections. Other duties include overseeing maintenance and safety inspections of State owned trucks, and occasionally driving the class 8 vehicle on the road. All interested candidates are encouraged to apply, but only the top candidates will be interviewed.

Heavy Truck Driver

Are you a safe, experienced truck driver with a valid Class A License? Are you seeking steady, local, part-time work that comes with great benefits and contributes towards cleaner air? The Portable Emissions Measurement (PEM) section is seeking two commercially licensed drivers to be part of the California Air Resources Board’s (CARB) mission to attain cleaner air in California. You will drive a variety of heavy duty diesel vehicles on Southern California roads for on-road emission testing, with trips of up to 6 or 8 hours at a time. You will also conduct essential safety inspections on each vehicle and maintain driver logs. You may occasionally drive passenger vehicles for on-road emission testing as well, and sometimes assist with installing emission testing equipment on a variety of vehicles. Air Resources Technician II

Research Division

The Greenhouse Gas Reduction Strategy Section is seeking a motivated Air Resources Technician II (ARTII) to assist technical staff in performing various tasks associated with refrigerant management program outreach, compliance assistance, and enforcement.  The ART II will assist the supervisor and technical staff with the following duties: conduct surveys to verify the rule applicability of businesses; quality control checks on thousands of reports submitted annually; enter, manage, and analyze comprehensive facility outreach database and greenhouse gas emissions data; identify non-compliant facilities and assist in the investigation of rule violations; prepare summaries of the regulations and respond to industry questions; assist staff with rule amendment process; draft briefing papers and present updates to peers and management. This person will also work with enforcement and local air districts in identifying potential non-compliant facilities for inspection and/or investigation. Some travel is required. This is a full-time permanent position.

The Freight Operations Section is looking for an individual to lead a freight hub data collection effort and participate on a team of technical and policy staff developing innovative and creative strategies for reducing air pollutant emissions from the freight transport system.  We are searching for an individual with technical expertise or an interest in freight-related technologies including aircraft, cargo handling equipment, locomotives, transport refrigeration units, commercial harbor craft, ocean going vessels, ground support equipment, trucks, and alternative fuels.  Knowledge base should include a familiarity with CARB’s publicly available Technology Assessments, mobile source emissions inventory, freight-related regulations and incentive programs, and related planning documents such as the State Implementation Plan, California Sustainable Freight Action Plan, and Scoping Plan.

Air Pollution Specialist

Air Quality Planning and Science Division

The Emission Inventory Development Section is looking for an enthusiastic Air Pollution Specialist to support emissions assessment needs in air quality planning, photochemical modeling, and the development and refinement of a statewide criteria and toxic emission inventory. Duties include collecting, analyzing and evaluating demographic and socio-economic data used to forecast emissions, developing updated growth profiles to reflect the most recent forecasts for specific sectors, providing support in developing emission forecasts in support of state and local air quality plans, performing quality assurance of emissions forecasts, and coordinating with ARB and district staff to resolve any issues related to the underlying growth and control assumptions. Other duties may include the design of database queries to extract information from the emission databases; development and automation of reports summarizing emission estimates, and future emission trends; and working with staff on procedures to improve the quality, accessibility, and understanding of the information stored in the emission inventory; and the development of area source methodologies.

Air Resources Engineer

The Testing and Certification Section is seeking a well-rounded individual with strong scientific knowledge and technical skill, and excellent written and oral communication skills to join our section as an Air Resources Engineer.  The section develops regulations to reduce evaporative and exhaust emissions from small off-road engines and other off-road mobile sources.  Working independently and under the general direction of the Section Manager, the incumbent is responsible for collaborating with other engineering and technical staff to gather data and oversee testing related to controlling emissions from off-road mobile sources through the application of the latest emissions reduction and zero emissions technologies.  Experience or knowledge of small engine battery-electric technology, emissions testing, and the regulation development process are highly desirable.

Looking for an energetic, creative, analytical and diplomatic manager for the Climate Investments Benefits Section, which is responsible for developing, implementing, and supporting the California Climate Investments Program with environmental and economic analysis and quantification of investments.  Guidance and quantification covers multiple project types including, but not limited to:  passenger transportation (including zero-emission cars, rail and bus transit, housing, and sustainable communities), freight transport, active transportation, building energy efficiency, renewable energy, and others.  The section coordinates closely with the state agencies administering California Climate Investments and is tasked with developing analytical methods to evaluate and quantify the greenhouse gas reductions and environmental, public health, and economic benefits from investments.

Air Resources Technician II

The Freight Operations Section is looking for a highly motivated, self-starting individual to become a member of its team.  We are looking for a friendly, outgoing person who can work a core schedule of four days per week – 7 hours each day to help with the Air Resources Board Equipment Registration program (ARBER).  The ARBER Team is primarily responsible for the implementation of the Transport Refrigeration Unit and the Drayage Truck regulations, which involves a variety of challenging tasks, including assisting stakeholders in navigating complex emissions reduction requirements via phone and email.  The ARBER Team also provides technical support commensurate with Air Resources Technician capabilities for other programs that reduce emissions of greenhouse gases, nitrogen oxides, diesel PM, and other air toxics.

The Organics Laboratory Section (OLS) of the Monitoring and Laboratory Division is looking for an experienced GCMS chemist to expand our analytical capabilities.  OLS staff perform analyses for our ambient network samples and are increasingly called on to perform method development for analyses to meet our clients’ needs.  Our current focus is on toxic VOCs, carbonyls, and pesticides.  Assembly Bill 617 requires additional community monitoring and new techniques to characterize ambient air samples near pollution sources.  We are moving into the use of thermal desorption for the analysis of VOCs and semi-volatiles and need a self-motivated, innovative, hands on, method development chemist.

The On-Road Model Development Section within Air Quality Planning and Science Division is seeking a self-motivated and creative individual who is interested in working in a fast paced, highly technical and constantly evolving environment. The ideal candidate would possess a detailed understanding of freight transportation system, vehicle emissions certification and test procedures, on-road emission control technologies, techniques for estimating emissions from vehicle testing data and be very familiar with recent findings regarding emissions of on-road heavy duty vehicles. Major projects include the development and refinement of the EMFAC on-road emissions inventory model for air quality and transportation planning, and new tools to estimate on-road emissions.  The section also plays a key role in development of on-road heavy duty mobile source regulations by providing technical support to regulatory divisions within CARB.
