Air Pollution Specialist

Emissions Compliance, Automotive Regulations & Science Division

The Aerosol Analysis and Methods Evaluation Section (AAMES) seeks an individual to carry out analyses of aerosols in the exhaust with chemical speciation methods like gravimetric analysis, ion chromatography, thermal/optical carbon analysis, Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry, X-ray fluorescence, and Inductive Coupled Plasma/Mass Spectrometry; real-time measurement techniques such as photoacoustic spectroscopy, differential mobility analyzer, aerosol counter; and state-of-the-art instrumentation such as time-of-flight mass spectrometry.  The successful candidate will also have the opportunities to interact with other regulatory agencies, industry stakeholders, and academic researchers; assemble, analyze, present, and report the speciation and measurement data; develop and evaluate test methods to support regulations or emissions standards; and work with a diversified and dynamic team of engineers and scientists for CARB’s emissions testing programs.

Air Pollution Specialist

Research Division

The Population Studies Section is seeking a motivated team player with an enthusiastic attitude and the dedication to work on some of the most important issues of our time. Some of the ARB’s highest priorities are examining how air pollutants, climate change, and public policy impact public health. We are seeking an applicant with expertise in the health sciences, a strong background in statistical analysis, and a desire to work with a diverse team of ARB scientists on research that helps to provide the information used as the basis of many of ARB’s air pollution and climate change regulatory activities. The responsibilities of the candidate will include work on research projects that investigate issues related to the health impacts of air pollution statewide, at the regional level, and in local communities. The successful candidate will also investigate ways that sustainable community design can affect air pollution exposures and public health. Effective communication of health research results to management, the general public, local air districts and Members of the Board is an essential component of this position. The ability to work effectively and cooperatively with a diverse stakeholder group including the public, other government agencies, and research organizations, and strong interpersonal and leadership skills are necessary. The ability to work proactively and efficiently on multiple projects with firm deadlines is expected. Familiarity with methods and protocols employed to evaluate how exposure to air pollution impacts people and communities is helpful. Experience in health and exposure assessments, environmental physiology, epidemiology, and GIS are also helpful, but not required.

Air Resources Engineer

Research Division

The Research Division is seeking a highly motivated individual to join the team responsible to design and implement two regulations related to fluorinated gases (F-gas): regulation for small container of automotive refrigerant (e.g., HFC-134a) and SF6 reduction for non-electrical and non-semiconductor sectors.  F-gases are potent greenhouse gases (GHG) so additional control is needed to meet ARB’s GHG reduction plans.  The primary duties include conducting technical and administrative activities in relation to the regulations.  Demonstrated experience with rule development and implementation, in-depth understanding of F-gas sources, emissions, and mitigation options; close relationships with industry, academics, and government agencies; and understanding of scientific and engineering principles are highly desirable.  The position requires close interaction, coordination, and teamwork with a broad range of stakeholders, and conducts research projects, analyses, interpretation of data, preparation of briefing notes and official documents, and information dissemination in support of these measures.
