Air Resources Technician II Permanent Intermittent

Monitoring and Laboratory Division

The Portable Emission Measurement Section (PEM) within the Freight Emissions Testing & Research Branch (FETRB) is seeking a qualified candidate for an Air Resources Technician-II position.  The primary responsibilities of this position are to assist with the installations of the Portable Emissions Measurement Systems (PEMS) on a variety of vehicles; conducting on-road testing on heavy-duty and light-duty on-road vehicles, and off-road equipment; monitoring emissions tests; and assisting with equipment trouble-shooting.  The incumbent will be tasked with conducting investigations, inspections, and studies on multiple vehicles’ exhaust after treatment devices; performing quality checks and audits; analyzing in-use operational data; and summarizing findings.

The Office of Emergency Response (OER) in the Monitoring and Laboratory Division is seeking a self-motivated, well-rounded team player with excellent written and oral communication skills, strong analytical and problem-solving skills, and the ability to work effectively with peers in multiple organizations. The candidate must be dependable, personable, and willing to learn.  Experience with the operation and maintenance of environmental monitoring instruments and knowledge of air monitoring practices and principles are highly desirable but not essential.  Senior staff will closely supervise and train the successful candidate.  A strong work ethic and writing skills are essential.  Completion of or near-completion of a college curriculum leading to a bachelor's degree in chemistry, engineering, environmental science or a related field is highly desirable.  Any experience in drafting technical reports, procedures, job instructions, service contracts or procurement documents would also be helpful.

Air Resources Engineer

The Freight Systems Section is looking for an experienced staff person to participate in a team developing innovative and creative strategies for reducing air pollutant emissions from the freight transport system.  Specifically, someone with technical expertise or interest in the potential for zero and near-zero emission freight equipment that can assist in developing new policies in relation to technology and associated infrastructure, while also helping process freight data and information.  Knowledge base should include a familiarity with technology types such as locomotives, heavy duty trucks, ocean going vessels, cargo handling equipment, and/or transport refrigeration units as well as an understanding for the technology duty cycle and infrastructure challenges associated with a transition towards zero emission equipment.

Air Pollution Specialist

The On-Road Model Implementation Section is seeking a highly motivated and resourceful team player with strong organizational and critical thinking skills.  Our section is responsible for developing ARB’s official on-road emissions model (EMFAC) and emission inventories for use in policy planning and regulation assessments.  This position will be responsible for mining and analyzing mobile source data and scientific literature in order to craft defensible and well documented methodologies for estimating California’s on-road mobile source emissions and trends.  The incumbent must have the ability to understand both technical and policy issues while demonstrating excellent written and oral communication skills.  In addition to strong analytical and problem-solving abilities, the most competitive candidates will have working knowledge and experience in relational databases including MySQL and computer programming languages including Python.
