Air Resources Engineer

ECARS

These Air Resources Engineer (ARE) positions (one) in the Aftermarket Parts Section and (two) in the Aftermarket Advanced Technology Section primarily involve in the evaluation of designs and test data of aftermarket parts and retrofit systems and may involve on-site observation of installation and testing of the selected device at the manufacturer’s chosen independent laboratory. The candidates chosen will perform engineering evaluations to determine the effect of performance parts on emissions, analyze vehicle/engine emission data, prepare reports and other technical documentation for approval, develop pertinent engineering test procedures for emission compliance testing and prepare necessary correspondences and guidelines to applicants. Evaluation of parts may also involve review of manufacturer durability test plans, on-board diagnostics II (OBD II) compliance, and impact on vehicle auxiliary emission control devices. Engineers in these sections may be assigned to assist in development of new regulations pertaining to emerging aftermarket areas.

Automotive Emissions Test Specialist I

TTD

Under the close supervision of an Automotive Emission Test Supervisor, the incumbent is responsible for testing motor vehicles and engines on dynamometers and measuring their exhaust emissions in accordance with the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) test procedures, established standard operating procedures (SOP) in the QA/QC manual, and test plan requirements. Other responsibilities include: driving vehicles, including motorcycles and all-terrain vehicles (ATV), on a dynamometer; operating and maintaining laboratory testing equipment; performing instrument repairs, calibrations and quality control checks; preparing test cells for weekly quality assurance audit; having a general understanding of the Vehicle Testing System (VTS); downloading data from the VTS; reviewing test cell reports; carrying out assignments involving fueling and draining of test vehicles; performing vehicle diagnostics, conducting safety inspections and on-road preconditioning on test vehicles; and providing other test support services.

Air Resources Technician II

RD

The Air Quality and Climate Science Section (Section) in the Atmospheric Science and Climate Strategies Branch, Research Division is tasked to advance our understanding of emerging atmospheric science, implement climate change mitigation regulations, and lead research efforts in climate science, GHG inventory, and air quality analyses to inform policy direction and support the health-protection mission of the agency. The section is seeking a highly motivated individual to join the team in air quality research to support CARB's emission reduction strategies (e.g., State Implementation Plan). Under general supervision, this incumbent has responsibility for assessment of air quality impacts and conduct of statistical analyses for criteria pollutants (e.g., ozone, PM2.5, and their precursors) and toxic air contaminants. This includes assessing the data post-processing, data quality assurance, reviewing ambient and emission inventory data, and conducting spatial and temporal analyses of these pollutants on large air quality and emission datasets using tools such as GIS, Python, MATLAB, Visual Basic, IGOR, R, or other programming skills.
