Ultramet developed a catalyst technology that uses silicon carbide foam as the catalyst support. This technology has application to a number of mobile source categories including marine engines, off-highway vehicles, motorcycles, and automobiles. It appears to achieve emission reductions at a lower cost than competing catalytic converters. Smaller and more durable catalytic converters can be built using this technology. This is because the silicon carbide support requires less material to achieve the same reduction efficiency as conventional catalysts. In addition, less precious metal loading is required in the converter.
