This page updated October 5, 2015
The processed hourly meteorological data are available from the Air Quality Planning and Science Division of the California Air Resources Board. The ASCII data are in the format specified by AERMOD for standard ASCII input.
The US-EPA Guideline on Air Quality Models recommend that the most recent five years of consecutive meteorological data should be used for air quality modeling studies. The OEHHA Air Toxics Hot Spots Program Guidance Manual for the Preparation of Risk Assessments recommend that the most recent five years of consecutive meteorological data should be used for risk assessment analysis. A single year may be used if it is the most conservative year.
These data are made available for your convenience. We will update these data on an "as needed" basis. This means where we have a specific application to include additional processed data for individual projects, the data will also be available at this location.
These meteorological data should be only used in the AERMOD model. These data are from NOAA's National Climatic Data Center (NCDC) and have been processed with AERMET Version 14134. They are the five years data sets from 1/1/2009 to 1/2/2014 and are from 114 airport meteorological stations. Table below lists the airport meteorological stations and districts each station located in. You may download the meteorological stations and air distrcits overlayed KMZ file, then open it in Google Earth or other geographic browsers to see the locations of the meteorological stations and air districts and to determine what the meteorological files you need to download for your project. You can download a compressed met file of a station by clicking on the balloon of the station in the map or on the station's name in the table below. A compressed file name is the station's ID. You will need an unzip program (like PKUNZIP or WinZip) to uncompress the data.
San Joaquin Valley Unified Air Pollution Control District,Santa Barbara County Air Pollution Control District, and South Coast Air Quality Manamement District have requested to use the AERMOD ready meteorological data processed by their districts instead of the airport met data. Please go to the district meteorological data section to download their AERMOD ready meteorological data for your project.
Please download the readme file for information as how the meteorological data is prepared. Mojave Desert AQMD has requested to process the meteorological data using the upper air data from the representative upper air sites other than the nearest upper air sites for surface sites in Mojave Desert AQMD (except BICYCLE LAKE AAF) and CHINA LAKE site in Kern County APCD. The zipped met file for CHINA LAKE site has the meteorological data sets using both the nearest upper air site (for projects in Kern County APCD) and the representative sites (for projects in Mojave Desert AQMD) respectively. Please read the readme file for detailed information.
If the representative meteorological data necessary for your AERMOD run is not available, you may want to create the screening meteorological data to perform a screening analysis using US EPA’s AERSCREEN model. The data for AERSCREEN are made available for your convenience. You may go to the AERSCREEN meteorological data web page to download the files you need.
For your reference, we have archived the ISCST3 meteorological file web page.
Please email questions regarding the files to HARP.
The fact that the California Air Resources Board (CARB) has supplied you with these data does not mean that the CARB will place its approval on subsequent applications. These data should not be used for other programs without approval from the reviewing agencies. We must emphasize that the models must be applied properly with appropriate input data which is consistent with their formulation, testing, and assumptions.
You may obtain meteorological data from San Joaquin Valley Unified Air Pollution Control District.
You may obtain meteorological data from Santa Barbara County Air Pollution Control District.
You may obtain meteorological data from South Coast Air Quality Manamement District.
